FAQs
Practice - Flexible Scheduling
We function using a very fluid schedule. We understand that players have academic, high school sports, family, (and for some) indoor club volleyball commitments. We would like everyone to have the chance to train without feeling as though they have to give something up so there are no required practices. Each month athletes will be able to choose the practices they attend based on what works with their schedule. Players can pick the practices they want to attend based on their schedule. Sign-ups are done online. Unused practices usually do not roll over to the next month however during the current pandemic if a player has to miss due to health issues those practices will be rolled over to the next month. All practices will be 1.5-2 hours long (if the weather is extremely hot or cold practice time may be cut to 60 minutes if there are health concerns). Players can come up to 30 minutes late or leave 30 minutes early if they have an academic or indoor responsibility with no penalty. There is no pressure to be there for each practice. However, once players do get to practice the expectation is to work incredibly hard. This type of scheduling has been a tremendous positive for our program and we look forward to continuing it.
Partners
Players do not need to have a partner to join Walker Beach. If players already have an established partner, that partnership will be honored and will not be disrupted. Individual players can be paired up but there is no guarantee of partnership. Players can, and are encouraged to play with multiple partners in one season.
Flexible Schedule - Tournaments
There are no required tournaments in beach volleyball (Walker Beach will provide a list of suggested tournaments). Players are free to play in as many or as few tournaments as they choose. Unlike indoor volleyball, pairs do not need coaches or any other teammates at a tournament to participate. Families are responsible for tournament sign ups and entry fees (which can range from $20-$150 a player) as well as transportation, hotels and food at tournaments held out of town. Tournaments are offered in Phoenix at Mesquite Beach and Victory Lanes. At this time Walker Beach will not be holding their monthly tournaments until larger gatherings are considered safe. If a player need help planning their tournament schedule coaches are available to assist them. In the sport of beach volleyball coaching during tournament play is limited. Coaches can only talk to players during timeouts, side switches, and between games. Most tournaments limit coaching to before and after game play only. Therefore, players should not be afraid to attend tournaments on their own. The sport teaches problem solving and self-motivation as players are often on their own during match play to work with their partner.
